Internship in User Support & Climate Services Division

Internship title: Geostationary ring climate data record generation

The GEO-ring project is a bilateral project with National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) supported Japanese Meteorological Agency (JMA) and India Meteorological department (IMD) to combine measurements from the whole history of geostationary satellites into a mapped radiance product. The primary aim of the project is to deliver consistently quality controlled, calibrated, and mapped geostationary satellite measurements to users for downstream applications such as retrievals of geophysical variables (e.g. clouds, aerosols, temperature, precipitation) and for assimilating into global and regional reanalyses. The task the intern shall undertake is to analyse new data records (e.g., from INSAT, the Indian geostationary satellites) to find out the suitability for them to be added to the geo-ring data record.

The internship gives a rare opportunity to gain a good understanding of the geostationary satellites, instruments, and the quality of the measurements. It also provides the candidate to work in the context of international collaboration and the utilisation of these measurements for climate application.

The intern will be supporting on-going activities related to the GEO-ring project and will therefore benefit from EUMETSAT’s and international expertise on this subject.

Duties
  • Inspection of new satellite images and identification of image anomalies using existing methodologies including machine learning;
  • Presentation of intermediate and final results;
